Dry fly slack leader formulae were developed by George Harvey, the former Dean of American fly fishing. These leaders will, when used with a cast that complements the leader, result in extended drag-free floats. An efficient cast to use with these leaders is the check cast. The forecast is stopped at about eye level, and, after the leader straightens out, the rod tip is lowered as line and leader fall to the surface of the water. Slack will result. Other specialty casts can be used with slack leaders to meet different stream and wind situations.
